What septic pumping costs right now
If your tank is full, backing up or overdue, the price matters less than getting it pumped before it turns into a repair. These are the published numbers we could find, labeled by where they come from.
- York and Adams County, PA: UNKNOWN. As of October 19, 2026, we did not find a York or Adams County septic company that posts its pumping prices online.
- Carroll County, MD (local contractor): The Plumbery Home Center in Mt Airy, MD lists a $350 minimum for up to 1,000 gallons, plus $75 for each 250 gallons over that, and says prices are subject to change. The page is undated; we checked it October 19, 2026. (source)
- National (not local): Angi, updated October 14, 2026, says most homeowners pay $297 to $584, with a $432 national average. Its table puts a 1,000-gallon tank at $325 to $700 and a 1,500-gallon tank at $450 to $1,100. (source) HomeAdvisor, updated June 17, 2026, gives the same $297 to $584 range and $432 average. (source)
What pushes the price up
- Tank size. Bigger tanks cost more to pump, as Angi's size table shows. (source) The Mt Airy contractor adds $75 per extra 250 gallons. (source)
- Access and digging. Angi says a tank under a deck, on uneven terrain or buried unusually deep raises the cost. (source) The Mt Airy price list charges $75 to dig up to 18 inches, $80 an hour for a backhoe and operator beyond that, and $25 per extra 20 feet of hose past the first 40. (source)
- Time since the last pumping. Angi names how long it has been since the last service as one of the main drivers. (source) The Mt Airy list charges $50 per extra backflush, or $75 to mechanically break up excessive solids. (source)
- Emergencies. The Mt Airy contractor adds a $120 minimum overtime charge for after-hours emergencies. (source) A reliable national emergency premium: UNKNOWN.
- Winter. Angi calls winter the least ideal time in cold climates, because frozen ground and ice make access harder and drive up labor and equipment costs. (source) See our winter pumping guide.
- Distance. The Mt Airy list adds $8 a mile beyond 20 miles from its shop. (source)
How often you'll pay
PA DEP's general guidance is pumping every 3 to 5 years, depending on tank and household size. (source) The EPA gives the same range. (source) Several local townships set their own cycle: York Township and Jackson Township (York County) require pumping every three years (source) (source), Liberty Township every three years on your district's cycle (source), and Franklin Township at least every three years, with District 3 due by October 31, 2026 (source). Hamiltonban Township sets two years for District I and three years elsewhere. (source) Your township notice controls your due date; see our township guides.
Get a real price before it gets worse
Fieldstone Septic connects homeowners in the Hanover, York, Gettysburg and Westminster areas with a local septic company. Fieldstone doesn't pump tanks itself, and the septic company sets the final price. Request a free quote or call (717) 316-0315, and a local septic company can reach out with a price and a date.
To keep the bill down, tell them your tank size and where the lids are. Angi suggests getting a detailed quote, comparing at least two, and asking how disposal is charged. (source)
